In 2018, Timmy Global Health approached our chapter about taking on a medical brigade to Santo Domingo, Ecuador. While Timmy has been working in this location for many years, March of 2019 was our chapter’s first time traveling to this location and working with our local partner, Hombro a Hombro.
The Ecuador Brigade consists of five clinic days during which we travel to various communities surrounding the city of Santo Domingo. A team of IU Timmy members, American physicians, and Ecuadorian healthcare professionals organize these clinics. Most communities presented with conditions reflecting their geographic location and their lack of access to medical centers in less rural and more urban areas. However, these communities had cultural differences, which truly showed the variation present even within the indigenous communities of Santo Domingo. As the majority of the residents we served live in low-income households, we help to provide services to patients at no cost. Consults, referrals, and medications are also provided with little to no barriers to care.
