Because other Timmy Global Health chapters had already established a relationship with organizations within Atlanta, Georgia, this is where IU Timmy traveled for our inaugural 2017 Domestic Brigade. Throughout the course of a week, Timmy members spent time serving in and around the Atlanta community, as well as learning more about everything the city has to offer.
IU Timmy partnered with another nonprofit organization, MedShare, to package medical supplies to be shipped internationally/ The brigade also partnered with Books For Africa, to help send a variety of books to children across Africa. Along with these partnerships, Timmy served at an afterschool program, taking care of and entertaining children until their parents could bring them home for the day. With the remaining time that the students had in Atlanta, they were fortunate enough to tour the Center for Disease Control and Prevention campus, check out the Georgia Aquarium, and explore downtown Atlanta.
IU Timmy Global Health is in the process of establishing a more sustainable domestic brigade, so we are considering traveling to a new community this upcoming spring (2018). If you have any suggestions for organizations that IU Timmy could partner with, in order to accomplish Timmy's goal of providing continuous care, or if you are interested in learning more about the domestic brigade, feel free to contact the Domestic Brigade Director, Marc Mertsching.
